Albury Station, Albury, NSW. Grand old station built in 1881. It used to be the transfer point on the break of gauge between Sydney and Melbourne. From reading on the web the broad gauge was pulled up a couple of years back and all replaced with standard gauge. It has one of the longest covered platforms in Australia and the building is over 300m meters long (info on the plaque at the front of the station). It has high ornate ceilings inside. Should replace our local poky station with this one - shame for all the apartment blocks that would need to be removed
Yes the station is active. I saw a train on the platform on the other side (not visible in this photo) and I have seen photos of the XPT service on the platform in this photo. The service is not frequent.
I think it was meant to impress - the plaque out front starts with:
"The station was a confident colonial government's territorial claim to counter the intrusion of Victorian railways into the Border District in the highly competitive 1870's and 1880's. Its designers seemed to be declaring, "Look on this monument, Victorians" and despair"."
I've been there. Had to wait there for a long time at 11pm once for the train back to Sydney. Couldn't get inside either. And no places nearby that were open where I could get some food either. But it's nice inside.

It's on the NSW/Victoria border - NSW side.
